Understand agent status and delivery
Agent status is not the same as draft or published configuration.
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | An incomplete setup record that must be completed |
| Paused | The agent exists but should not accept new live traffic |
| Active | The agent is eligible for live traffic when its delivery requirements also pass |
| Archived | Supported by the stored status schema, but no general archive workflow is currently exposed in the Agents interface |
Voice activation requirements
The interface requires a voice agent to have:
- a published version;
- an assigned phone number;
- status Active.
Phone assignment itself requires an agent that has been published at least once. Inbound routing also checks the number's active state, workspace subscription and credits, payment lock, concurrency, and the agent's paused state.
Pausing prevents new inbound calls from being accepted. It does not rewrite the published configuration or release the number.
Website Chat activation requirements
A live Website Chat requires:
- a Chat Agent with a published version;
- agent status Active;
- a Website Chat deployment with at least one allowed origin;
- deployment status Active.
The server will not enable a deployment until the agent is published and active. Public bootstrap checks the deployment, channel, agent status, and published-version pointer again.
Publish, start, and deploy are separate
Publish = choose production configuration
Start = make agent status Active
Deliver = assign an active number or enable a website deployment
Changing one layer does not silently change the others. This makes it possible to publish a reviewed configuration while keeping the agent paused until an agreed launch time.
Current enforcement note
The product interface blocks starting an unpublished agent. The generic status-update endpoint does not independently enforce every UI prerequisite, so normal product controls are required for consistent state. Delivery runtimes still require published configuration before they can serve live traffic.
