Assign a number and activate an agent

Assignment answers where calls route. Publication answers which configuration runs. Agent status answers whether the agent accepts real calls. All three must be correct for a normal inbound launch.

Prerequisites

  • The number is active and belongs to the current workspace.
  • The destination is a voice agent in the same workspace.
  • The agent has a published version.
  • The agent does not already have another active number.
  • No other active number is already assigned to that agent.
  • You have permission to manage workspace numbers.

Assign a number

  1. Open Numbers > Inventory.
  2. Find the active number.
  3. Select the destination agent in the assignment control.
  4. Wait for the inventory and agent connection display to refresh.
  5. Open the agent and verify that its header shows the number.

An agent that has never been published is excluded or rejected. Publish it first; assigning a number is not a shortcut around the draft lifecycle.

Start the agent

After assignment, open Agents or the agent editor and select Start Agent. The normal interface requires both a published version and a number before a voice agent can be started.

An Active status alone does not guarantee that a call will be accepted. The workspace must also have an active subscription, a usable credit balance unless unlimited, no payment lock, and available concurrency.

Reassign or unassign

If the number is assigned to an Active agent and you choose a different destination or no destination, the Numbers page asks for confirmation. On confirmation, the previous agent is paused before the number is reassigned or unassigned.

This prevents the old agent from appearing live after it loses its route. Review both agents after reassignment:

  1. Confirm the old agent is Paused.
  2. Confirm the number appears on the new agent.
  3. Start the new agent if required.
  4. Place an external test call.

If an agent already has another number, unassign that number first. Wirevox does not automatically swap two assignments.

Delete an agent

Deleting an agent unassigns any number connected to it. The number remains a workspace number unless it is separately released. Because agent deletion also removes associated operational data, use reassignment when the goal is only to change routing.

Draft changes after assignment

You can continue editing an assigned Active agent. Browser testing can use the draft, but inbound calls still load the published version. Publish the change when it is ready; the phone-number assignment does not need to be recreated.

For planned routing changes:

  1. Publish and test the destination agent.
  2. Pause the current route during a controlled window if interruption is unacceptable.
  3. Reassign the number.
  4. Start the destination agent.
  5. Place an external test call.
  6. Confirm logs and monitor the first production calls.
