Release and reclaim numbers

Releasing an active number does not immediately return it to the provider. Wirevox first moves it into a 30-day grace period so the workspace can reclaim it.

Release is different from unassignment:

  • Unassign keeps the number active in inventory but removes its agent route.
  • Release changes the number to grace, unassigns it, and stops routing calls.
  • Permanent release removes a grace number from the provider account and cannot be undone in Wirevox.

Release an active number

  1. Open Numbers > Inventory.
  2. Verify the exact number and current agent assignment.
  3. Select Release.
  4. Read the billing and grace-period confirmation.
  5. Confirm only when incoming traffic has been moved or intentionally stopped.

The number becomes unassigned immediately. Unlike the confirmed reassignment flow, number release does not itself guarantee that the formerly assigned agent's status is changed. Review and pause that agent if it should no longer appear operational.

Billing effect

For an extra paid number, release removes the recurring extra-number subscription item so it is not charged in the next cycle. Wirevox does not issue a prorated credit for unused days in the current billing period.

An included number remains reserved during grace. While it is reserved, a different acquisition can be treated as a paid extra. Review the purchase confirmation rather than assuming an included slot is immediately reusable.

Reclaim during grace

Reclamation requires an active subscription. Wirevox reactivates the same number immediately, subject to provider state and billing setup.

  • It can return as included if the workspace has available included-number capacity.
  • Otherwise it becomes a paid extra and the current recurring charge is added.
  • It returns unassigned, so assign it to a published agent again.
  • Start or verify the agent, then place an external call.

Grace expiry and permanent release

After the grace deadline, scheduled cleanup releases the number at the provider and removes it from recoverable inventory. A user can also permanently release it early from the grace list.

Permanent release cannot guarantee that the same number will ever become searchable or purchasable again. Update websites, directories, advertisements, forwarding, and customer communications before allowing a business-critical number to expire.

Subscription changes

When a subscription is deleted, Wirevox moves all active workspace numbers to grace and removes their assignments. Resubscribing during the grace period can reactivate them, applying the new plan's included-number limit and paid-extra classification.

After a plan downgrade, Wirevox keeps the oldest numbers within the new included allowance and reclassifies excess included numbers as paid extras. Review Numbers and Billing after any plan change.

Safe release checklist

  • Confirm the number and workspace.
  • Identify inbound, outbound, SMS, transfer, and public-directory dependencies.
  • Move or stop traffic.
  • Export any required operational records.
  • Release and verify the grace deadline.
  • Pause or reconfigure the former agent.
  • Reclaim before the deadline if plans change.
